IRD - Projects

The IRD project team leverages research, training, and innovation to drive sustainable development and global health initiatives, particularly in combating neglected tropical diseases.

IRD leads and supports numerous research projects focused on strengthening epidemiological surveillance, improving control strategies, and developing public health interventions, particularly in countries of the Global South. These initiatives specifically target neglected tropical diseases such as onchocerciasis, leveraging innovative approaches to optimize disease monitoring, treatment effectiveness, and health policy development. Through active involvement in national and international programs, IRD contributes to the reinforcement of health systems and the advancement of scientific knowledge. Its expertise in collaborative research enables the development of concrete solutions to major global health challenges.

Test and treat for onchocerciasis

Test and Treat project « Rapid identification of high levels of Loa loa microfilaremia: a “test and treat” strategy for mass drug administration », 2012-2018, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This strategy opens up for onchocerciasis elimination in areas co-endemic with loiasis.

DOLF « Death to Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis », funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. We evaluated a strategy (6-monthly mass drug administration with albendazole) that opens up for lymphatic filariasis elimination in areas co-endemic with loiasis.

“Seeking Therapeutic Options to Prevent Filarial infections and post-Ivermectin Loa-related Adverse Reactions”, funded by the French National Agency for Research. We are conducting different clinical trials targetting Loa loa microfilaremia.
